Grace to You and Peace from God, our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Six Simple Practices for Lent.
1. Read the Farewell Discourses of Jesus found in John 13-17 over and over. Study and reflect on
what Jesus is telling his disciples and us as the church today. (Here's a link.)
2. Pray through the Prayer of Humble Access (page 30, UM Hymnal). It is a reminder moving us toward
humility and being receptive to God’s grace.
PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS
We do not presume to come to this thy table,
O merciful Lord,
trusting in our own righteousness,
but in thy manifold and great mercies.
We are not worthy
so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table.
But thou art the same Lord,
whose property is always to have mercy.
Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord,
so to partake of this Sacrament of thy Son Jesus Christ,
that we may walk in newness of life,
may grow into his likeness,
and may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
3. Read, listen to and study Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s sermon, “A Knock at Midnight”. This is about the friend who persists in seeking bread. A question is how are we hungering for justice and righteousness. (Video:
Here's a link.) Here's
a link to a printed copy of the sermon.
4. Pray through the Collection of Hymns for Personal Devotion. Spend some time with the words of each hymn. Each page, each stanza (paragraph) is a prayer and they are powerful prayers. Pray these hymns as prayers. (Here
is the link.)
.5. Make a financial gift toward our campus ministries for food insecurity among many college students on campuses across our conference. You may make your gift to the church noted for “Campus Ministry.”
We will distribute to our two local Methodist colleges in the area.
.6. Share a meal with a companion or mentor, a missional network or covenant group and reflect on what it means to hunger and thirst for justice and righteousness, and how our churches can meet the spiritual hungers of our own people and those who surround us.
